Summary of Country of My Skull
1995 reist Langston Whitfield nach Südafrika, um für die 'Washington Post' über die Wahrheitskommissionen zu berichten. Aufgabe dieser Kommissionen ist die Offenlegung der Verbrechen des Apartheidregimes. Dabei geht es nicht nur um die Aufklärung von zum Teil brutalen Verbrechen, sondern vor allem auch um die Gegenüberstellung der Täter mit ihren Opfern. In den Sitzungen treffen die Peiniger von einst auf Frauen und Männer, die durch sie kaum Vorstellbares erdulden mussten. Auge in Auge stehen sich Opfer und Täter gegenüber. Whitfield erfährt Geständnisse aus einem Sumpf aus Verbrechen, Verblendung, Dummheit und brutaler Berechnung. Die Art, wie Opfer und Täter miteinander umgehen, übersteigt die Vorstellungskraft des amerikanischen Journalisten. Am Rande freundet er sich mit der weißen südafrikanischen Schriftstellerin Anna Malan an, die als Radioreporterin an den Hearings teilnimmt. Und die Gräueltaten verschmelzen sich mit einer klassischen Liebesgeschichte...
